What is water mist and Automist fire suppression

What is Water Mist?

Often called misting systems, water mist fire suppression systems disperse water through nozzles as small droplets, or mist, using water delivered by a high-pressure pump.

The size of the water droplets separates a water mist system from a traditional wet sprinkler system. There are three types of pressure systems defined by NFPA 750: low, intermediate, and high. High-pressure water mist systems operate at pressures greater than 500 psi.

Droplets smaller than 1,000 microns are required for a system to be considered water mist. Typical traditional sprinkler droplets are around 5,000 microns in size.

It is easier to disperse a larger number of droplets when they are smaller. A greater number of water droplets means a larger surface area exposed to heat. As more drops evaporate and turn into steam, more heat will be absorbed.

Water mist suppression systems: how do they work?

Fires can be controlled, suppressed, or extinguished by using water mist. Automist suppresses a fire by:

  • Evaporation of the mist cools flames and surrounding gases
  • By evaporating, oxygen required by the fire is displaced
  • Water droplets themselves reduce radiant heat

This water mist operates by rapidly absorbing heat, thus interrupting the combustion process by cooling what is burning until it is extinguished.

Benefits of the Automist fire suppression system:

Automist suppression systems have many advantages, including their overall safety and effectiveness in suppressing and extinguishing fires.

Automist fire suppression systems offer the following benefits:

  • The ability to extinguish fires more effectively
  • Initial activation by smoke to ensure the earliest possible intervention in the event of a fire.
  • The fire seat is better penetrated due to Automist’s targeted water mist application from a wall mounted position.
  • A better cooling effect.
  • The Automist system remains ready for re ignition even after the system  has been stopped using the stop button located on then Automist controller.
  • Automist uses less water and has lower water requirements than a traditional sprinkler system.
  • Automist connects to a mains water supply, removing the need for large water storage tanks.
  • No need to purchase an extinguishing agent to recharge the system.
  • Full test of all components by simulating a system activation, verifying correct functions.
  • Ensure safe egress from a room by controlling its temperature.
