Increased fire protection for vulnerable resident

Purpose
Orbit Housing Association identified that a tenant living in a basement flat with limited mobility would face difficulties exiting the building in an emergency. In order to protect the tenant, Orbit wanted to explore the possibility of fitting Automist® to the basement flat.
Approach
After inspection, it was determined that Automist® would be a suitable choice for the flat because the system can be retrofitted with minimal disruption. Upon submission of plans to Firemist, it was determined that three Automist® spray heads would provide the necessary protection of the habitable rooms within the flat. Orbit requested a surface installation for all Automist® pipework to minimise disruption to the tenant.
In the event of a fire, Plumis Automist® is designed to increase survivability in the room of origin and prevent the fire from growing, allowing more time to escape. Electronically triggered, it helps improve detection rates and activation times. Upon activation, the infrared sensors scan the room for a fire before directing a dense mist of water towards the fire.
It can have up to six Smartscan Hydra® spray heads connected to one compact pump, providing full coverage of a property without additional water storage tanks or upgrades to main water supplies.
With Automist®, existing buildings can be retrofitted with minimal disruption and without an upgrade to the mains water supply. In addition, it uses only 5.6 litres of water per minute (10 times less than a traditional fire sprinkler system).
Outcome
A complete package installation was provided by Firemist, including plumbing and electrical requirements. The installation took just a day to complete.
